Listen to student podcaster Leah Kelleher talk with Chittenden Solid Waste District School Outreach Coordinator Rhonda Mace, AKA Recycle Rhonda in our most recent podcast episode of Mudseason Shortcuts.

Recycle Rhonda travels to schools all over Chittenden County to teach young Vermonters about proper waste disposal. In a variety of programs, Rhonda covers topics ranging from sorting to composting techniques. The programs are catered to the classroom and include interactive activities like sorting classroom materials in “Trash Talkin’ & the 3 R’s” and learning about worm anatomy through holding real worms in “Worms Alive!”.

CSWD programs aim to instill environmentally conscious behaviors in Vermont’s future generations. Students who build these habits early in life are more likely to continue these behaviors. Additionally, Rhonda finds that her students pass on information learned in the classroom to their parents and peers.

In 2020, food scraps will be banned from the landfill entirely in a new universal composting law. The law is a part of Act 148, which the Vermont Legislature unanimously passed in 2012. In 2020, mandates will force Vermonters to adopt new waste disposal habits. Guiding us through this transition, thanks to CSWD programs and Recycle Rhonda, will be our youngest residents.
